Baker. Newsboy. Lieutenant. Engineer. Fiddler. Cabby. Fisherman. This humble cap certainly touts an illustrious resume. Its latest occupation? Crowning the heads of the fashion set for Fall/Winter 2017. If you haven’t yet encountered the newsboy cap on your Instagram feed—where have you been?
Now I’ve never been one much for trends. They come in such fickle deluges that I take each one with a grain of salt. Add onto that my conviction that I could barely pull off any hat, let alone this unique iteration, and I was just about ready to swipe left on the little baker boy.
Cue a chance encounter at Urban Outfitters and an incurable case of curiosity, and well, all I can say is that denial isn’t just a river in Egypt. Thinking of giving this trend a whirl? Read on…
As the Other Mother once told Coraline, “Black is traditional.” Black is naturally the easiest place to start when first dipping a toe into this trend, especially if you’re still on the fence about it. Black will go with anything and everything in your closet (like so).
If you’re feeling a little more daring but still want to keep your options open, go for a neutral with a pattern like this gray patchwork herringbone hat. The pattern adds some visual interest while the color still lends itself to endless styling options.
If you’re ready to grab this trend by the horns (or the brim, in this case), you can’t fail with a faux leather topper in eye-catching cognac. Believe me, this exact cap caused quite the furor in the comments of a recent Insta post!
And here’s a plus: any of these caps, in whatever color or material or pattern, will serve you well if you’re simply not in the mood to wash your hair. Just throw those locks into a low messy bun, pop a fiddler onto your head, and cavort out the door without a care in the world. I won’t tell if you won’t!
Finally, a moral to this story: never be afraid to try a trend. It might not work out; or you might just surprise yourself and fall in love.
